Each statistic, event, and institutional claim is cited individually, so you can check the evidence for a specific fact rather than a whole page.

How citations work

A citation connects one claim to one source, with a page or section reference where the source allows it. Select any citation marker to see the source, when it was published, when we retrieved it, and an archived copy where one exists.

Official statistics, university statements, court records, and journalism are labeled differently so you can tell whose account you are reading. See the methodology for how sources are verified.

Source types

Federal government
Department of Education data and findings, federal investigations, and federal statutes and regulations.
State government
State agency reports, audits, and legislation.
Local government
County and municipal records and reports.
University
Annual Security Reports, policies, Title IX reports, and official announcements. These are the institution's own account.
Police record
Records released by campus or municipal police departments.
Court record
Filings, orders, judgments, and dockets from criminal or civil courts.
Civil complaint
The opening document of a lawsuit. It contains allegations, not findings.
Government investigation
Findings, resolution agreements, and letters from government investigations.
Journalism
Reporting by established news organizations, used where primary records are unavailable and always labeled as journalism.
